What I Learned When My Small Home Business Failed

Here’s a little story, a warning of sorts, on how not to conduct a small home business.

It was during one of the pandemic lockdowns in 2020 (thanks, Covid-19) that I came up with this bright idea. Bored out of my skull I was idly surfing through YouTube channels when I came across one about making natural, scented candles at home.

Using the last of my savings, I threw caution to the winds and set out on my candle making adventure.

Mistake number one

In my eagerness, I bit off more than I can chew. I wanted to sell all types of candles: paraffin, soy wax and beeswax. Sourcing these, during pandemic lockdowns were a nightmare and expensive and yet, I did not give up. Whilst not giving up is a good trait, in hindsight I realize that it made me spend more time, money and energy into things which could have been done far easier, under different circumstances. The only upside here? It was a good distraction, during a terrible, uncertain time period.

Mistake number two

I wanted to specialize in beeswax as it’s organic and recommended for those with breathing difficulties. That proved to be a very expensive decision. Since I did not get the opportunity to use the beeswax supplies I bought, (sourced from a rural area known for its pristine…
